The Peasants' Revolt of 1381 was the first significant mass rebellion in European history. IT has a number of causes, but its roots lay in the exploitation, oppression and poverty inherent to feudal society. In his talk, Paul Foot discusses multiple attempts by the feudal ruling class to hold down wages among the growing number of peasants who were wage-labourers. This was one source of discontent. Another was the general corruption of the ruling class, in particular the Church, who were taking vast quantities of money and products from the peasantry.
