John Milton was born on 9 December 1608 and died on 8 November 1674, which means he lived through many of the key events in what Christopher Hill dubbed 'the century of revolution': the drive towards royal absolutism during the 1630s; the Anglo-Scottish 'Bishops' War' pf 1639-40; the English Civil Wars of 1642-48; the trial and execution of Charles I in 1649; the first English Republic (or 'Commonwealth') of 1649-1660; the 'Restoration' of the Stuart monarchy in 1660; the Great Plague of 1665-66; and the Great Fire of London in 1666.  But Milton was no mere observer of events: he was also an enthusiastic polemicist on behalf of the English Revolution and one of the Republic's senior civil servants. Briefly arrested by the Restoration monarchists in 1660, he was freed largely due to the efforts of fellow Parliamentarian and fellow poet Andrew Marvell.
