The sheer number of people who voted Yes in the 2014 independence referendum was a verdict on neoliberal Britain. The 307-years-old British state came within 200,000 votes of its dissolution. With a more radical vision of independence, we may well have won. But we didn’t. And, as we mark the 10th anniversary of the vote, the break-up of Britain no longer feels within reach. The SNP has crashed amid financial scandals. Its membership has halved and the 2024 general election saw it lose over half a million votes. At the same time, the thirst for change that drove people to back independence has only intensified. From climate chaos through the genocide in Gaza to the advances by fascist and racist forces, the system is creating destruction and misery on a vast scale. How did we get here? Why have we not broken up the British state yet? Did we miss the opportunity? And what went wrong?
