'A distinctive and original collection' (Mark Thomas, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, York University)

Timely and provocative... a smart and original contribution... [a] unique combination of theory and illustrative case studies. (Samia Botmeh, Assistant Professor in Economics, Birzeit University, Palestine)

Globalisation has seen an increase in the international mobility of labour, and a deepening of exploitation of immigrant and migrant workers. This singular collection of case studies reflects critically on the possibilities and challenges of organising migrant workers across the world, against the backdrop of a voracious international capitalist economy, racism and xenophobia, and, often, lack of support from established trade unions. The combination of academic scholarship and activist authorship in the book provides unique insights, and gives those who are often nameless and voiceless an identity and voice. This is a ‘must read' book for labour sociologists, those interested in current developments in workers' organisation, and those engaged in supporting marginalised workers and reshaping traditional labour movements. (Linda Cooper, Associate Professor, Adult Education, School of Education,University of Cape Town)

Aziz Choudry is associate professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University. He serves on the board of the Immigrant Workers Centre in Montreal. Mondli Hlatshwayo is a researcher in the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation at the University of Johannesburg. Previously he worked for Khanya College, a Johannesburg-based NGO, as an educator and researcher. As an activist, he has been involved in a number of anti-xenophobia campaigns in South Africa.
